How We Rate

Last updated: October 12, 2026

Every brewer on Pick My Brewer carries two scores: Our Rating, an editorial score out of 10, and Owner Reviews, star ratings from people who own the product. This page explains how each one works, so you know exactly what you are looking at when you compare brewers.

Our Rating: the editorial score

Our Rating is a research-based score. For each brewer we study the manufacturer’s specifications and warranty terms, the findings of established coffee and homebrewing review publications, and patterns across large numbers of owner reviews. We pay particular attention to recurring complaints, such as machines that fail after a year, leak, or are hard to keep clean, because those problems rarely show up in a spec sheet.

We look for agreement across sources rather than leaning on any single review. When we use a product ourselves, we add those hands-on notes to its listing.

The five things we score

Each brewer is scored from 1 to 10 on five criteria. These are the same five criteria owners rate in their reviews, so the two scores measure the same things.

  • Brew Quality. How good the coffee or beer is. For coffee makers, that means brewing temperature, extraction consistency, and taste. For grinders, grind consistency. For homebrew systems, temperature control and repeatable results.
  • Build Quality. Materials, long-term reliability reports, and warranty length.
  • Ease of Use. Setup, controls, learning curve, and how the brewer fits into a daily routine.
  • Ease of Cleaning. Descaling, dishwasher-safe parts, and hard-to-reach areas that trap old coffee or residue.
  • Value. How well the brewer performs for its price compared with others in its price tier.

Why the weighting changes by type

Not every criterion matters equally for every brewer. A machine that cannot hold espresso temperature fails at its one job no matter how easy it is to clean, while cleaning matters a great deal for a French press. So the five scores are combined using weights that fit each type of product:

Compared with similar products

Each brewer is judged against products of the same type and price tier. A $30 French press is not marked down for failing to match a $350 drip machine. That means a 7.5 on a budget brewer and a 7.5 on a premium brewer both mean “very good for what it is,” not that the two machines are identical.

What the numbers mean

  • 9 to 10: Best in class. Very little in its tier does the job better.
  • 8 to 8.9: Excellent, with minor trade-offs.
  • 7 to 7.9: Very good. A solid choice with some clear compromises.
  • 6 to 6.9: Decent. It does the job, but notable compromises or recurring complaints hold it back.
  • Below 6: Significant weaknesses. We would usually point you to something else in the same tier.

Owner Reviews: what people who own it think

Owner Reviews come from readers who have used the brewer. Reviewers give an overall star rating out of 5 and also rate the same five criteria we use: Brew Quality, Ease of Use, Ease of Cleaning, Build Quality, and Value. Each published review shows its criteria breakdown, so you can see not just how much someone liked a brewer, but why.

We moderate reviews only to remove spam, abuse, and reviews that are clearly not about the product. We do not edit ratings or remove reviews because they are negative.

Why the two scores can differ

Our Rating weighs every criterion against a consistent standard and against similar products. Owner Reviews reflect individual experience, including how a brewer fits someone’s routine and taste. When the two disagree, that is useful information. A brewer owners love more than our score suggests may be especially pleasant to live with, while one owners rate lower may have problems that only appear over months of use.

How we stay independent

Pick My Brewer earns money through affiliate links. When you buy through a “Check Price on Amazon” link, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

Commissions do not affect scores. Every rating is set with the rubric on this page, and manufacturers do not pay for listings or ratings. We show price tiers instead of exact prices because prices change often; use the link on each listing for the current price.

Updates and corrections

Products change, firmware updates fix problems, and new reliability patterns emerge. We revisit scores when meaningful new information appears, and we retire listings for products that are no longer sold. If you think a score is wrong or out of date, please contact us. We read every message.
