I bet everyone knows a good recipe for latte lovers that gets them started in the morning. What is more pleasant and soothing on a rainy day or a cold winter evening than a hot cup of your tasty latte? A latte is made with espresso coffee and hot steamed milk.
I went over the latte vs cappuccino dilemma in another post, so I am not gonna go into details and try to explain to you which one is better. In Italy, cafe latte is prepared using 1/3 espresso, 2/3 steamed milk and a layer of foamed milk of around 5 mm on top.
There is another version of latte which they make with strong coffee mixed with boiling milk in the ratio of 1:1. Although this might seem similar to a cappuccino, they use a milk foam layer of 2 cm in a regular cappuccino. An espresso machine is required.
Let’s see a few latte recipes that I tried and enjoyed the most:
Vanilla Almond Milk Latte
Ingredients: 2 cups vanilla-flavoured almond milk, 1 cup instant espresso coffee, a little bit of cocoa.
Directions: the milk has to be warmed in a pitcher or in the microwave. Then insert the whip or blender into the warmed milk and whip until the milk becomes dense foam. Prepare the espresso coffee according to the instructions or use an espresso machine, and fill each cup halfway. Then divide the foamed milk among the mugs and into the coffee. Add the cocoa on top. Done!
Ingredients: 2 tsp of any flavoured syrup, 1 ¼ cups 2% milk, 1 mug of brewed espresso.
Directions: you have to pour the milk into a steaming pot and heat to 145-165 degrees Fahrenheit using the steaming wand. Then measure the flavoured syrup into a big coffee mug. Brew the espresso in an espresso machine and add to the mug. Pour the steamed milk into the mug, using a spoon to hold back the foam. Add the foam on top. Done! This is a very flavorful latte recipe.
There is something else too worth mentioning called latte art. It has nothing to do with the latte recipes, but it can still be used with any of them. It refers to the style of pouring the steamed milk onto the espresso to create a design on the surface of the latte.
It is just a way to embellish the top layer of foam. This art is difficult to be created on a constant basis and it depends on the experience of the latte artist and the quality of the espresso.
Another flavorful latte recipe
For a perfect latte recipe, we have to pay attention not to turn it into a cappuccino. A latte basically is espresso and steamed milk. The shots are poured into the cup, the milk is steamed but not frothed and then poured into the cup too.
The milk has to be steamed properly to get a syrup-like thickness, unlike a cappuccino, if we are going back to the latte vs cappuccino talk, which is espresso, steamed milk and foam. The foam is added on top of the milk and espresso and because there is less milk it will have a stronger flavour.
Let’s prepare more latte recipes:
Pumpkin Spice Latte
Ingredients: 2 tsp pumpkin puree, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 cup of milk, ¼ tsp pumpkin pie spice, 1 cup brewed espresso.
Directions: you have to brew your espresso in an espresso machine first. In the meantime, you have to whisk the pumpkin, vanilla, milk and pumpkin spice. Warm over medium heat, whisking the whole time until it gets frothy and hot. Do not boil it. Now pour the espresso into a mug and the pumpkin milk mixture over it. Done!
Ingredients: 1/3 cup 2% milk, 2/3 cup of eggnog, 1 cup of brewed espresso, a little bit of nutmeg.
Directions: pour the milk and eggnog into a steaming pitcher, and heat to 165 Fahrenheit using the steaming wand again. Brew the espresso in an espresso machine, then pour it in the mug. Add the steamed milk and eggnog into the mug using a spoon to hold back the foam. Add the foam on top and sprinkle the nutmeg. Done!
Starbucks Latte Recipe
Ingredients: 3 cups of milk, 3 tsp Starbucks gingerbread syrup, two shots of Starbucks espresso pods, a little bit of nutmeg and cinnamon.
Directions: steam the milk in a pitcher, place the gingerbread syrup in a preheated coffee mug, then brew a single shot of espresso using the Starbucks coffee pod. Top with steamed milk and foam. Then garnish the foam with a little bit of nutmeg and cinnamon. Done!
